What is the Long Island Iced Tea?
This infamous drink seems like it has been around forever, however, we reckon it was probably invented in the 1970s by Robert ‘Rosebud” Butt in New York. Now to be perfectly honest this busy tipple hasn’t always got the best rap, owing mostly to its presence at nearly every dodgy student party of the 1980s. That being said the Long Island Iced Tea cocktail has stuck around and we think it is delicious. A complicated balance of the ‘white spirits’ (and orange liqueur) is lifted by the fresh zing of lime and all tied together with the refreshing effervescence of your favorite cola.

Cocktail Hackers Pro-Tip
There really is no end to the possibilities to change things up with this great cocktail.
The Long Island Iced Tea recipe allows for a lot of experimentation. All of the component ingredients can be substituted for different styles and brands that each can bring a new dimension to the cocktail. You could replace the vodka with a flavoured version; try an old tom or cask strength gin; play around with different styles of rum….maybe a dark rum?; give a whiskey-based orange liqueur a go and then go crazy with the plethora of high-quality colas out there.
